LIN 620: Advanced Studies in Second Language Acquisition
LIN 620-1001 Issues in Second Language Writing (Fall 2008)
Monday 4:40PM - 7:30PM
Second language writing is an interdisciplinary field of inquiry that draws from and contributes to various related fields, including applied linguistics, literacy, rhetoric and composition, and TESOL, among others. This course will explore various questions related to second language writing theory, research, instruction, assessment and program administration, such as:
- What are the characteristics of second language writers?
- In what ways are second language writers similar to first-language writers? In what ways are they different?
- How can we develop or modify courses and programs to make them more inclusive of various types of second language writers?
- How can we develop appropriate placement procedures for second-language writers?
- How can we develop fair and effective assessment practices for second-language writers?
Since the characteristics and the needs of second language writers vary considerably from individual to individual and from context to context, it is difficult, if not impossible, to arrive at a single solution that works in all situations. For this reason, this course will focus not so much on ready-made approaches to teaching or administration but on the nature of second language writing as well as various issues that arise in working with second language writers in a wide range of institutional contexts.
