LIN 521: Methods of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

This section of LIN 521 introduces master’s and doctoral students to various principles and practices of teaching English to speakers of other languages in the postmethod era. The traditional aim of the “methods” course has been to showcase various “established” ways of teaching English to speakers of other languages, but this course goes beyond that goal to help prospective teachers, teacher educators, and second language researchers understand, analyze and critique various pedagogical approaches in their larger historical, institutional, and sociolinguistic contexts. In other words, this course helps you not only to expand your pedagogical repertoire but also to develop the ability to devise pedagogical solutions that respond to specific instructional contexts and student populations.
